ASWWU Social's Remarks to the Economic Development, Tourism, & Event's Commission of College Place, Wash.
March 19, 2018
Timothy Kosaka:
Good evening, my name is Timothy Kosaka and I am the Social Vice President for the Associated Students of Walla Walla University. It is an honor to be here and to have the opportunity to share about an event that my department is planning for Sunday, May 20, 2018 right here on College Avenue!
I have always loved the small town family atmosphere of College Place and have sought to create an experience where our University’s students and the members of this community are able to interact with one another and share in an experience that is meaningful to our residents young and old alike. The event that we are planning is called Block Party and is built upon this vision.
ASWWU’s Block Party will feature over a hundred booths lined across College Avenue from 4th street to Whitman Avenue. We plan to showcase the activities and accomplishments of Walla Walla University’s various student clubs and departments through dozens of interactive booths. Our representatives on Mayor Crowder’s Youth Advisory Commission will be working with their fellow College Place schools to include our city’s youth and to showcase their accomplishments as well. We hope that you, the business leaders of this valley will join us by selling your great food and products at this afternoon of exciting activities for the whole family.
With over a thousand expected to attend Block Party from the community and University, we believe that your involvement in this event will expand the reach of your business to members of this valley both young and old. We are working with Mayor Crowder and Administrator Rizzitello to do the hard work of organizing such a large event and bringing out the crowds. All we are asking is for your business to join the party.
I have invited our Event Director, Savanna Pardo to briefly share about the activities that ASWWU will put on for the children, college students, and adults. Following her remarks, our Director of External Relations, Natalie Schmidt, will share about how you can get involved. At the close of this evening’s meeting, we will be available to answer any additional questions.
Thank you and please welcome Savanna Pardo.
Savanna Pardo:
Thank you Tim, and good evening everyone.
As Tim said, I am the event Director for Block Party and it is my honor to be part of an event that will bring our students and this community closer together.
Our vision for Block Party is to do have activities that will suit all ages. Of course, one of the strongest marketing tactics for brining parents to events is having activities for their kids. ASWWU will be providing bouncy houses, mini pools, and carnival styled games for the young kids, sports, games for our teens and college students, and plenty of giveaways for guests of all ages.
As Tim shared, we will also have booths from our various campus clubs and departments as well as our local schools. Each will have fun and educational activities geared toward guests of all ages!
The event will run from 4 pm – 7 pm, taking us right through the warm afternoon and dinner hour. As Natalie will share, this will be a perfect opportunity for your businesses to expand your circles right in our valley. I invite you to welcome her as she shares about how you can get involved!
Natalie Schmidt:
Thank you Savanna, and good evening everyone.
As Savanna shared, my name is Natalie Schmidt and I am the Director of External Relations for ASWWU Social. Building off what Tim and Savanna shared, a portion of the activities we are putting on are geared toward kids in order get the entire family out to this fun event. As the kids are enjoying the various games, contests, and inflatables sponsored by our department, parents will be excited to shop for some new household items, gifts, clothes, and more. As the afternoon progresses, college students and families alike will get hungry and thirsty and will want to try a bite or drink!
As you think about how your business or organization could be part of this event, I want to help you picture the block. Each side of College Avenue will have booths lined from end to end. Food trucks will fill the ends of the roads and a stage will sit on the top of the hill at the center of the avenue. Vendors can select a single booth which is 10 ft by 10 ft or a double booth which is 20 ft by 20 ft.
When you host a booth, you are gaining your business or organization a free spot at a major community event. You are helping your brand to reach hundreds of new potential clients and you are making money throughout the event. Better than that, you are making a difference in your community, bringing residents together as we celebrate the culture of our valley. What’s the catch? College Avenue is only a thousand feet long and once it’s full, it’ll too late to join the party.
Thanks so much for your time. Tim, Savanna, and I look forward to talking with you after this meeting.
